FRAME DRUMMER TO PERFORM AT SLU CONCERT & SOLSTICE CEREMONY

CANTON - Internationally recognized frame-drummer Glen Velez will 
perform in concert at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, December 
14, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.
	In addition, Velez will perform at a Winter Solstice Ceremony, 
to take place on Friday, December 13, at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial 
Chapel, and he will conduct a workshop in frame-drumming, on 
Saturday, December 14, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Blackbox Theatre. 
All events are open to the public, free of charge.
	A former member of the Paul Winter Consort and of Steve 
Reich & Musicians, Velez's own music has been featured on National 
Public Radio's "All Things Considered." His concerts include 
performing on the Egyptian riq (a small, intricately inlaid 
tambourine), the Irish bodhran (a large, single-headed drum) and 
the North African tar (a frame drum played throughout the Sahara 
desert region).
	In addition to many of his own recordings and instructional 
videos, Velez has recorded with a diverse array of artists, 
including Pat Metheny, Marc Cohn, Suzanne Vega and Roger Kellaway.
	North Country Public Radio is media sponsor for the 
concert. It is also supported by the Birdsong Endowment for 
Music.
