RECENT ST. LAWRENCE ALUMNA GIVES $600,000 FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

CANTON -- Hilary Ayn Valentine, a 1989 St. Lawrence University
graduate from Menlo Park, California, has donated $600,000 to her
alma mater to establish a scholarship fund benefiting women psychology
majors.
The scholarship will be awarded annually, to one junior and
one senior woman majoring in psychology, based on financial need.
Valentine, who is a private investor, said of her gift, "First,
and most importantly, I would like the Valentine Scholarships to assist
two academically capable young women in their pursuit of a St. Lawrence
education. Second, I want to recognize the wonderful teaching I received
at St. Lawrence, particularly from Professor of Psychology James Wallace.
The analytical and personal skills I learned through my St. Lawrence
liberal arts education and psychology degree were especially useful in
determining both my personal and career goals. Finally, I hope my gift
inspires other young alumni to give back to an institution that greatly
deserves their continued support."
President Daniel F. Sullivan commented, "Hilary's decision to
make this investment in the University is evidence of the strong bonds
formed between teachers and students at St. Lawrence. This is the largest
gift we have ever received from a graduate of 10 years or less, it sets
a wonderful example for her peers. We applaud her generosity and her
dedication to St. Lawrence."
While a student at St. Lawrence, Valentine was a member of
Kappa Delta Sigma sorority and participated in several collaborative
research projects with faculty in the psychology department. She has
been active as an advocate to support breast cancer patients and to
further breast cancer research in the San Francisco area.
