'U.S. News & World Report' Lists St. Lawrence Among Best Colleges

CANTON - St. Lawrence University has risen two places in the U.S. News & World Report ranking of national liberal arts colleges, just released. St. Lawrence University is Number 56 among the 266 best, most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the nation.

"We know, from our own research, that St. Lawrence University is one of the best liberal arts institutions in the nation," said President William L. Fox. "It is nevertheless gratifying to have independent research that confirms it. We're pleased that the achievements of our students, faculty and staff have been recognized in this way."

The 2010 rankings, which include fewer than half of all colleges in the nation, are available at www.usnews.com/colleges, and will also be published in the September issue of the magazine. The rankings have been compiled and published by the magazine for 26 years, grouping schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Colleges are compared against their peer institutions on a variety of factors.

Among the factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment; graduation and retention rates; faculty resources; student selectivity; financial resources; alumni giving; and graduation-rate performance.

St. Lawrence recently was rated as one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduate education by the editors of The Princeton Review. Other recent accolades include being named one of only 200 institutions in Student Horizons' "Colleges of Distinction" listing.
