UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM FUNDED AT SLU

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Upward Bound program has been
notified that its application for continued support from the United
States Department of Education has been approved. The University's
program was one of 790 funded this year, from 1,250 applications;
St. Lawrence has hosted the Upward Bound program since 1970.
Funding from the U.S. education department covers approximately 92
percent of the program's costs, with the balance coming from institutional
funds, New York State and the United States Department of Agriculture.
 	Upward Bound seeks to assist capable, but underachieving, high
school students in meeting three goals: attaining a high school diploma;
enrolling in a program of post-secondary study; and attaining a
post-secondary degree.
	St. Lawrence's program serves both Native American and non-Native
students in the Canton, Clifton-Fine, Gouverneur, Harrisville, Heuvelton,
 Massena, Norwood-Norfolk, Parishville-Hopkinton and Salmon River
school districts, both during the school year and in the summer.
	Outreach services during the school year include counseling and
advising; tutoring; field trips; and college visits. During the summer,
students participate in a six-week residential experience on the
St. Lawrence campus that includes an adventure week (whitewater rafting,
canoeing, hiking, etc.); an academic program of core and enrichment
classes; tutoring; mentoring; and field trips.
	"We are proud to be able to continue to serve the area's
disadvantaged youth for at least four more years through this program,"
said St. Lawrence University Upward Bound Director Shaili Singh.
	The Upward Bound summer program at St. Lawrence will take place
from June 23 to August 1, with approximately 90 students participating.
