UPWARD BOUND BEGINS 33RD YEAR AT SLU

CANTON - The 33rd annual Upward Bound residential summer program at 
St. Lawrence University began June 30 and continues through August 2.
        Some 90 students in grades nine through 12 are participating 
from Salmon River, Massena, Norwood, Parishville-Hopkinton, Canton, 
Heuvelton, Gouverneur, Harrisville, and Clifton-Fine Central Schools.
        Students in the program are exposed to a variety of activities, 
including academic classes, educational trips, career exploration and 
cultural activities. This year's program  includes three-day trips to 
Lake George/Albany and the Sterling Renaissance Faire near Rochester, 
plus a Community Carnival for younger children from the area, to take 
place on the University Quadrangle, on July 23. Academic and enrichment 
classes in the program include English, math, social studies, science, 
French, Art in Nature, Culinary Arts, drama, soccer and basketball.
        Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to equip 
participants with the skills and motivation necessary to complete 
secondary education and succeed with post-secondary education. 
St. Lawrence's program serves a balanced number of Native American and 
rural white students.
