University Chorus Concerts Set For November 15 And 16

CANTON - Fall concerts by the University Chorus, with the theme "Toward the Unknown Region," will be performed on Saturday, November 15, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus at St. Lawrence. The events are open to the public, free of charge.

The featured work is Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, performed using the composer's original chamber orchestration. Soloists will be from the chorus: Alex Jacobs, soprano; Hollis Easter, baritone; and Eric Key, baritone. The orchestra includes students and faculty from St. Lawrence as well as the Crane School of Music.

Opening the concert will be an early work of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams from which the title of the program was taken. A "Song for chorus and orchestra," Toward the Unknown Region is a setting of a section from American poet Walt Whitman's Whispers of Heavenly Death.

The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is drawn from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students of St. Lawrence. It is directed by Barry Torres; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist.
