University Chorus Presents 'Romantic Nature' Concert at SLU April 14
CANTON- The University Chorus, Canton’s community chorus, will present their spring concert “Romantic Nature” on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. in the Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall in the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
“I chose music extolling the beauty and power of nature as expressed by great Romantic era composers such as Brahms, Mendelssohn, Elgar and Stanford,” Director Barry Torres said.
The featured work will be the Songs of Nature, Op. 63, the only a cappella choral work by the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořak. Works by Benjamin Britten and contemporary American composer Paul Parthun will also be included. Parthun’s Four Haiku, short evocative pieces in the style of the Japanese haikus he sets, will feature accompanist Sara Simon-Shult and St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of Philosophy Laura Rediehs on flute.
A visual accompaniment will be provided by North Country photographer Melissa Burchard. A selection of slides from her collection of nature photos will be on display throughout the concert.
The University Chorus brings together the vocal talents of students, faculty and staff, and community members. They perform a varied repertoire in theme-oriented concerts, often with instrumental accompaniment, in the best tradition of American community choral singing.
