CANTON - A concert of music by two of England's finest composers, Gustav Holst (1874-1934) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), will be performed by the University Chorus and String Orchestra on Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, at 4 p.m., in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The performances are open to the public, free of charge.
The String Orchestra, directed by Christian Hosmer, will be augmented with wind, brass and percussion players from the St. Lawrence community and the Crane School of Music accompanying the chorus. Accompanist Barbara Phillips-Farley and organist-in-residence Sondra Proctor will be featured with the University Chorus, directed by Barry Torres, along with soprano Alex Jacobs and speaker Reverend Shaun Whitehead.
Included in the concert are Holst's The Hymn of Jesus and Williams' A Song of Thanksgiving.
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is drawn from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students of St. Lawrence.
The String Orchestra performs a diverse assortment of musical styles including classical, baroque, traditional, contemporary and popular music, using the various techniques required to play them, and performs both on and off campus.
