University Chorus Presents 'The Singing Society' In Concert
CANTON - "The Singing Society" is the theme for the University Chorus concert on Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The 19th century saw the rise of community-based singing groups, both civic- and church-sponsored, in Europe and the U.S. The concert features compositions written for these ensembles. The University Chorus, combining the vocal talents of students, faculty, staff and community neighbors, is directed by Barry Torres, with Barbara Phillips-Farley as accompanist. This performance includes members of the St. Lawrence Wind Ensemble, with Tim Savage as director, and violinists Patricia Goodhines and Louis Trzepkowski.
Featured will be Franz Schubert's popular Deutsche Messe, D.872; two standards of the English repertoire, "God So Loved the World" and "God Be in My Head"; Johannes Brahms' Geistliches Lied, Op. 30; three songs on nature written by Felix Mendelssohn; and songs by Stephen Foster, including "Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming," "Oh, Susannah" and "Hard Times."
