University Chorus Spring Concert Theme Is 'Home, Sweet Home'
CANTON - The spring concert of the University Chorus, "Home, Sweet Home: Family, Friends and Lovers," will be on Saturday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is drawn from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students of St. Lawrence. Barry Torres directs the University Chorus; Barbara Phillips-Farly is accompanist and for this performance, first-year student Dania Cunningham, of Honeoye Falls, NY, will perform on violin.
Songs about home, community, children, parents, mentors, lovers and friends in a wide range of styles and sentiments are featured in the concert. Punctuating the program are selections from a highly popular songbook from the turn of the 20th century, Heart Songs. This publication was meant to provide music for the home, to be made by family and friends around the parlor piano. The concert will include "You Never Miss the Water," "Come Home, Father" and "Sweet and Low," all from the book. Other selections from Ireland, Germany and Canada are on the program, as well as Eric Whitacre's "Five Hebrew Love Songs," and the old-time barbershop favorites "Wait 'til the Sun Shines, Nellie" and "By the Light of the Silvery Moon."
