A List 4/4/05 POPULAR SONGS ON THE BILL FOR UNIVERSITY CHORUS CONCERT CANTON – "Stardust Melodies: Songs of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley" is the theme for the University Chorus spring concert, to be performed Saturday, April 9, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. in Gulick Theatre, at St. Lawrence University. The concerts are open to the public, free of charge. Songs to be performed include George M. Cohan's "Mary's A Grand Old Name" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy"; and the Gershwins' "S'Wonderful," "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Of Thee I Sing." A medley of songs from the musical Showboat is also on the program, as are songs from Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific and The Sound of Music, and the standards "Deep Purple," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "St. Louis Blues" and "Over the Rainbow," among other works. The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is drawn from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students of St. Lawrence. The University Chorus is directed by Barry Torres; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist. Soloists who are featured in this concert reflect the diverse community membership of the ensemble; they include Rose Hodge, retired Canton High School teacher; Canton music teacher Barbara Burdick; St. Lawrence Associate Professor of Speech and Theater Rebecca Daniels; St. Lawrence Associate Professor of Music Michael Farley; former University staff members Karl Keller and Alice Hessert; Canton attorney Christopher Rediehs; Canton physician Jon Kay; Potsdam residents Arlene Babich and Karen Sullivan; Ogdensburg resident Eric Key; SUNY Canton student Tyler Curtis and St. Lawrence students Megan Roppolo, Phyllis Puzzo and Jessica Mott.
