UNIVERSITY CHORUS TO PEFORM 'MUSICS OF THE WORLD' IN CONCERT

CANTON – "Musics of the World" is the theme for the University Chorus spring
concert, to take place on Saturday, April 24, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 25,
at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The concerts
are open to the public, free of charge.
A sampling of music of different cultures from around the world, the
program illustrates the meaning of the popular saying, "music is the universal
language." While communicating the distinctive characteristics of each culture,
music simultaneously strikes the common chord of all of humanity, from the joyous
and exultant rhythms of Africa and the Caribbean, to the beautiful lyric melodies
of England and Scotland, the driving vocal styles of Balkan singing (featuring
the women of the University Chorus) and the soulful expressions of African-Americans
expressed in traditional spirituals. The concert will conclude with adaptations of
old American songs by Aaron Copland, including the hymn "Shall We Gather at the
River."
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the
St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is drawn
from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students of St. Lawrence.
Barry Torres is the director; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist. For these
concerts, Jennifer Vincent-Barwood and Aaron Busick are percussionists.
