WORKS FROM AMERICAN OPERETTA PERFORMED BY UNVERSITY CHORUS
CANTON - The University Chorus will present American Operetta, a review of choruses
from turn-of-the-century musical theater, on Saturday, April 14, at 8 p.m. and Sunday,
April 15, at 2 p.m., in Gulick Theater at St. Lawrence University. The performances are
open to the public, free of charge.
Barry Torres is the director of University Chorus; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist.
American composers' musical response to Gilbert and Sullivan and Franz Lehar, operetta
was the precursor of the more popular modern musical. Tuneful songs, romantic melodies,
lush harmonies - many of the songs were made famous by Hollywood's singing sweethearts
of the 1930's, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Among them: "Sweethearts" and "Every
Lover Must Meet His Fate" (from Victor Herbert's Sweethearts); "Stouthearted Men" (from
Sigmund Romberg's The New Moon); "One Alone" (from Romberg's The Desert Song); "Some
Day You Will Seek Me" (from Rudolph Friml's The Vagabond King); "Toyland" (from Herbert's
Babes in Toyland); "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" (from Herbert's Naughty Marietta); and
"Can't Help Lovin' That Man" and "Why Do I Love You?" (from Jerome Kern's Showboat).
Soloists are K. Chad Graham, Eric Key, Greg Matejcik, Karl Keller, Janet McFarland,
Laura Ramsey, Juli Pomainville, Marilyn Constantine and Katherine Gleason, with
guest artists Chris Hosmer on cello and Jennifer Kessler, violin.
