UNIVERSITY CHORUS OFFERS CONCERT OF 'UNIVERSAL PRAISE'

CANTON - "Universal Praise," a concert of music for the
Thanksgiving season, will be presented by the University
Chorus on Friday, November 9, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November
11, at 4 p.m. in Gulick Theatre at St. Lawrence University.
The concerts are open to the public, free of charge.
The program will include Bach's Cantata 29 "Wir danken
dir, Gott" ("We Thank Thee, God"), written in 1731. This
particular work is one of several cantatas composed by Bach
for the liturgical office of the investiture of the municipal
council of Leipzig. The chorus will also perform Handel's
Utrecht Jubilate, written in 1713, in celebration of the
signing of the Peace of Utrecht, which marked the conclusion
of 13 years of overseas conflict for the British. The two
featured works will be performed with orchestra and soloists.
The chorus will also present two a cappella anthems of the
Colonial American composer William Billings, including
"Universal Praise."
The University Chorus is a community-based ensemble
sponsored by St. Lawrence's music department. The chorus
was founded in 1970 and is currently under the direction
of Barry Torres. The group's accompanist is Barbara
Phillips-Farley.
