A List 4/24/00 UNIVERSITY CHORUS TO PERFORM AT SLU CANTON -- The University Chorus will present spring concerts at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 29, at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 30, at 4 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. Both events are open to the public, free of charge. The program includes two pieces of sacred music composed by the young W.A. Mozart, "Regina Coeli, K. 276" and "Missa Brevis, K. 194"; the motet "Adoramus te, Christe," formerly attributed to Mozart, but composed by Quirino Gasparini; and the oratorio "Jephte," by Giacomo Carissimi, the "father" of the oratorio. The latter piece tells the story of the Old Testament Hebrew leader who must sacrifice his own daughter to secure victory in battle with the Ammonites. This year's Bence recitalist, Hallie Fishel, returns to St. Lawrence for the concert, as a guest artist in the role of Jephte's daughter. The University Chorus is directed by Barry Torres, director of vocal music. Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist on the organ, joined by lutenist John Edwards on the theorbo, a bass lute.
