31ST UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM BEGINS AT SLU

CANTON -- The 31st annual Upward Bound residential summer program 
at St. Lawrence University began July 1 and continues through August 3.
	Some 90 students in grades nine through 12 are participating 
from Salmon River, Massena, Norwood, Parishville-Hopkinton, Canton, 
Heuvelton, Gouverneur, Harrisville, and Clifton-Fine Central Schools.
	Students in the program are exposed to a variety of activities, 
including academic classes, educational trips, career exploration and 
cultural activities. This year's program  includes a five-day trip to 
Washington, D.C., and a Community Carnival for younger children from 
the area on July 24. Academic and enrichment classes in the program 
include English, math, social studies, science, French, Art in Nature, 
Culinary Arts, drama, soccer and basketball.
	Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to equip 
participants with the skills and motivation necessary to complete 
secondary education and succeed with post-secondary education. 
St. Lawrence's program serves an equal number of Native American and 
rural white students.
