UPWARD BOUND IN 30TH YEAR AT ST. LAWRENCE


CANTON - The Upward Bound program at St. Lawrence University will 
mark its 30th anniversary this summer with a celebration planned 
on campus Monday, July 17.
	The residential summer program began July 2 and continues 
through August 4. Some 78 students in grades nine through 12 are 
participating from Canton, Salmon River, Massena, Parishville-Hopkinton, 
Heuvelton, Gouverneur, Norwood-Norfolk, Clifton-Fine and Harrisville 
schools.
        Students in the program are exposed to a variety of activities, 
including academic classes, educational trips, career exploration and 
cultural activities. The program this year includes an Iroquois social 
dance, a community carnival, a Mardi Gras celebration, career and college 
admission days and the 30th anniversary celebration.
        Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to equip 
participants with the skills and motivation necessary to complete 
secondary education and succeed with post-secondary education. 
St. Lawrence's program serves an equal number of Native American and 
rural white students.
