UPWARD BOUND IN 30TH YEAR AT ST. LAWRENCE
CANTON - The Upward Bound program at St. Lawrence University will
mark its 30th anniversary this summer with a celebration planned
on campus Monday, July 17.
The residential summer program began July 2 and continues
through August 4. Some 78 students in grades nine through 12 are
participating from Canton, Salmon River, Massena, Parishville-Hopkinton,
Heuvelton, Gouverneur, Norwood-Norfolk, Clifton-Fine and Harrisville
schools.
Students in the program are exposed to a variety of activities,
including academic classes, educational trips, career exploration and
cultural activities. The program this year includes an Iroquois social
dance, a community carnival, a Mardi Gras celebration, career and college
admission days and the 30th anniversary celebration.
Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to equip
participants with the skills and motivation necessary to complete
secondary education and succeed with post-secondary education.
St. Lawrence's program serves an equal number of Native American and
