A List 7/19/99 UPWARD BOUND IN 29TH YEAR AT ST. LAWRENCE CANTON - The Upward Bound program at St. Lawrence University is currently hosting its 29th annual residential summer program, which began July 4. Some 80 students in grades nine through 12 are participating in the program on campus through August 6. Local high schools with participating students include Canton, Salmon River, Massena, Parishville-Hopkinton, Heuvelton, Gouverneur, Norwood-Norfolk, Clifton-Fine and Harrisville. Students in the program are exposed to a variety of actitivies, including academic classes, educational trips, career exploration and cultural activities. Two community-oriented activities for this year are the students' participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program and a community carnival for children. Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to equip participants with the skills and motivation necessary to complete secondary education and succeed with post-secondary education. The St. Lawrence University Upward Bound program recently received approval for another four years of funding from the U.S. Department of Education, in a national competition.-30- Back To News Releases
