MOHAWK HISTORY RECOUNTED IN ONE-MAN PLAY AT SLU

CANTON -- "The Wars for Turtle Island: Recollections of a Mohawk
Warrior," a one-man play developed and performed by Chief Darren
Bonaparte of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, will be presented at
St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in
Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the
public, free of charge.
Based on Mohawk oral tradition and documentary research,
the narrative tells the story of the ancestors of a Mohawk chief
as they struggled to cope with the European invasion of their
territory from the 16th through the early 19th century. Using
authentic period costume and artifacts, Bonaparte brings the world
of the chief, Ohnawiio, to life.
"The Wars for Turtle Island" has been performed at Upper
Canada Village's Military History Day and the Akwesasne Freedom School.
