FILM 'NIGHT PASSAGE,' TALK WITH FILMMAKER AT SLU
CANTON - A screening of the film Night Passage, followed by a lecture and discussion
with filmmaker Trinh Minh-ha, will take place at St. Lawrence University on Friday, November
4, at 3 p.m. in the Winston Room of the Student Center. The event, part of the Asian Studies
Initiative, is open to the public, free of charge.
Born in Vietnam, Minh-ha is a filmmaker, writer and composer. The recipient of several
awards and grants (including the American Film Institute's National Independent
Filmmaker Maya Deren Award, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American
Film Institute, and the California Arts Council), Minh-ha's films have been shown
widely in the U.S. and throughout the world. She has traveled and lectured extensively
and has taught at the National Conservatory of Music in Dakar, Senegal; at universities
including Cornell, San Francisco State, Smith and Harvard; and is professor of women's
studies, film studies and rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.
Night Passage (2004) is a "provocative digital tale" that "tells the story of
three young friends traveling for a brief moment together on the train between life and
death. Their journey into and out of the land of 'awakened dreams' occurs on a long ride
on a night train."
