HAVERFORD DEAN NAMED ST. LAWRENCE DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE
CANTON – Joseph A. Tolliver, who has been dean of students at
Haverford College in Pennsylvania for eight years, has been named vice
president and dean of student life at St. Lawrence University. He will
begin his new duties at St. Lawrence on July 1.
“Joe Tolliver brings to St. Lawrence University 34 years of experience
at several of the very best residential liberal arts colleges in the
nation,” said President Daniel F. Sullivan. “He understands
well how we connect academic and co-curricular programming to benefit
students in all facets of their growth and development. Our St. Lawrence
community anticipates welcoming an educator of such depth, breadth and
commitment.”
Tolliver is a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, where he also earned a master's
degree in college student personnel administration. Tolliver earned
a second master's degree and the Ed.D. from Columbia University Teacher's
College. Prior to joining the staff at Haverford in 1998, he held positions
at Skidmore College, Connecticut College, Trinity College, Barnard College
and Pace University.
“Though I have enjoyed my eight years at Haverford College and
believe that my efforts were effective and had a positive impact, I
have become very interested in and quite intrigued by the history of
and future of St Lawrence University,” said Tolliver. “I’d
very much like to become an active participant in and contributor to
SLU’s future. Additionally, earlier in my career I’d spent
a lot of time in the North Country and in Eastern Canada, and I’m
delighted to accept the invitation to join such a great institution
and interesting community.”
At St. Lawrence, Tolliver will lead the division of student life, which
includes the offices of co-curricular education and programming; career
services; health center; counseling center; residential learning communities;
St. Lawrence Leadership Academy; David Garner Center for Student Volunteerism;
multicultural affairs; safety and security; and, with the President,
the chaplaincy. In addition, Tolliver will share responsibility for
St. Lawrence’s nationally known and recognized First-Year Program,
working collaboratively with the Vice President of the University and
Dean of Academic Affairs, and the Associate Dean of the First Year,
to help realize the program's aims and objectives.
