SLU GALLERY HOSTS DIVERSE EXHIBITIONS

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University's Richard F. Brush Art Gallery opens
three new exhibitions this month, displaying a diversity of styles, media
and subjects.
"Every Bead A Prayer," opening January 22, is an exhibition of
thangkas by Russell Ellis. Thangkas are Tibetan iconographic paintings used
as visual support for meditation practice. Ellis, a Tibetan Buddhist, creates
his thangkas using beads, and reciting mantras or prayers as he works. Each
thangka is approximately 15 feet square and contains an estimated 450,000 beads.
A gallery discussion with Ellis will be held on Thursday, February 8,
at 7 p.m.; the exhibition continues through February 16.
"Male Gazing: Images of White Masculinity from the Permanent Collection"
opens January 21 and was curated by Assistant Professor of Gender Studies Joel
Morton. The exhibition, taken from works in the Brush Gallery's permanent
collection, "contrasts traditional portraiture of elite white men with a wide
range of artistic and popular images of white males, nude and otherwise. The
exhibition de-mystifies the male gaze by transforming the conventional
he-who-does-the-seeing into that which is seen."
A public reception will be held to celebrate the exhibition on Monday,
January 29, at 5 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibition continues through February 16.
"Ben & Todd: Recent Works" will be in the gallery from January 21 through
February 16, focusing on work by Ben Grant and Todd Matte. Matte will host a
discussion in the gallery on Friday, February 2, at 3 p.m.; Grant will host a
discussion in the gallery on Friday, February 16, at 3 p.m.
Matte is a St. Lawrence University senior fine arts major from Canton,
whose artwork has been included in previous gallery exhibitions. He was named
a University Fellow last year, to spend part of the summer months studying
installation art in Vietnam. Grant, also of Canton, is a student at the Cooper
Union School of Art in New York City.
