WEST AFRICAN TEXTILES ON EXHIBITION IN SLU GALLERY

CANTON -- "The Spirit of West African Textiles," an exhibition that 
explores a variety of cultural and spiritual motifs embodied in 
fabrics, will be on view in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at 
St. Lawrence University from March 20 through April 21. It is organized 
and circulated by the Council for Creative Projects in Lee, 
Massachusetts, and New York.
	A slide lecture titled "Threads of Thought/Patterns of Speech: 
African Cloth as Language" will be given by Skidmore College Professor 
of Art History Lisa Aronson on Monday, March 27, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 123 
of the Griffiths Arts Center, in conjunction with the exhibition.
In addition, two workshops will be given by Pan Déoué Danse, of 
Montreal:
	- An African drumming workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 
from 6 to 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall.
	- A workshop in African dance will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 
from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Griffiths Dance Studio, Room 40.
	Workshops are limited to 20 participants each; the cost is $7 for 
students and $15 for adults. Register in advance by calling 315-229-5174.
	The exhibition includes more than 60 textile-based objects from the 
private collectin of Roda and Gilbert Graham. Examples of both woven and 
non-woven cloth, raffia palm velvet cloth and Kente cloth are included, as 
are objects from Nigeria, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Zaire, Mali and Ghana, 
among other countries.
