ROMANIAN STUDENT AT SLU SCORES WELL IN MATH COMPETITION

CANTON - First-year St. Lawrence University student Cristian 
Voicu, of Romania, has received honorable mention in a prestigious 
mathematics competition.
	Voicu ranked 47th in the 59th Annual William Lowell Putnam 
Mathematical Competition, a competitive examination administered by 
the Mathematical Association of America. A total of 2,581 students 
from 419 colleges and universities in Canada and the United States 
participated in the competition.
	Two other students from St. Lawrence, Long Dai of Dover, 
New Hampshire, and Julia Scherschligt of Arvada, Colorado, also 
participated in the competition, held in December. Results of the 
competition are published in the American Mathematical Monthly.
	The competition began in 1938 and is designed to stimulate 
a healthful rivalry in mathematical studies in colleges and 
universities in the U.S. and Canada.
