SLU GROUP TO PERFORM TEX-MEX DANCE MUSIC

CANTON – Texas/Mexican-style dance-band music from the 1950s and 1960s,
orquesta tejana, will be performed by St. Lawrence University's Special
Productions Ensemble in an event on Thursday, April 15, at 8 p.m.,
featuring renowned Tejano singer Johnny Hernández. The performance, open
to the public free of charge, will take place in the lower level of the
Noble Center on campus (formerly called the Undergound), converted for
this occasion into a Texas-style dance hall.
Hernández began singing at the age of 15 with his older brother's
band, Little Joe and the Latinaires, which in 1969 was rechristened
Little Joe y la Familia, one of the foremost bands in what was known as
la onda chicana, "the Chicano wave." He has appeared on over 50 albums,
including eight solo albums, and has shared the stage with Santana,
La Mafia, James Brown, La Sonora Santanera, Billy Gibbons and Asleep at
the Wheel, among others. Hernández continues to record and perform from
Texas to California; in 2001, he was inducted into the Tejano Roots
Hall of Fame.
