'Teach-In' At St. Lawrence Continues Discussion Of King, Obama
CANTON - Continuing the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the inauguration of President Barack Obama, a teach-in will be held on Thursday, February 5, in the Winston Room of the Student Center at St. Lawrence University.
From 10:10 to 11:40 a.m., Charles V. Willie, professor emeritus at the Harvard University School of Education and a roommate of King's in seminary school, will speak on "The Bus Boycott in Montgomery: A Perfect Grassroots Movement"; his daughter, Sarah Willie-LeBreton, associate professor of sociology at Swarthmore College, will speak on "From King to Obama: Today's Meaning of the Movement."
Following a music interlude from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Steve Peraza, a 2006
St. Lawrence graduate and doctoral student at the University of Buffalo, will speak at 1 p.m. on
"'Being the Martin Luther King Jr. of St. Lawrence': Jeffrey Worthington Campbell '33 and Historical Memory." A second music interlude will follow, from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.
From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., there will be a panel discussion with Willie, Willie-LeBreton and Peraza, led by Associate Chaplain Shaun Whitehead, on "The Music of the Movement: Focusing the Message." Events will wrap up from 3:30 to 4 p.m., led by staff from the Center for Diversity and Social Justice.
An area has been set aside for children's activities, with student volunteers, in the Student Center's Crandell Room, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
