A List 11/18/02 SLU HOLDS RALLY TO 'TAKE BACK THE NIGHT' CANTON - A "take back the night" rally will be held on Tuesday, December 3, at St. Lawrence University, beginning with a meeting in the Underground, E.J. Noble University Center, from 8 to 11 p.m. It is sponsored and organized by the Women's Resource Center. "Take back the night" is an occasion for all persons, especially survivors of sexual assault, abuse and violence, to reclaim the night. Speakers who staff sexual assault hotlines and centers against sexual assault and domestic violence in St. Lawrence County will give presentations about resources available in the community. A campus march will follow, to "take back" the campus and proclaim the outrage of the group and community against those who commit and endorse violence against others. Following the march, the group will re-assemble in the Underground, and the floor will open for any victims of sexual assault or other kinds of violence to tell their stories of survival. All persons from the community are encouraged to attend and participate. In conjunction with the event, the Advocates, a group of students, faculty and staff trained to assist those who have experienced sexual harassment or sexual assault, are sponsoring the Clothesline Project, which bears witness to sexual violence through t-shirts, airing the "dirty laundry" of sexual violence in society. Decorated shirts represent a particular person who has survived sexual violence or died as a result, and are made by the survivors or their friends. Different colors of the shirts represent various types of sexual violence. The shirts will be displayed in the E.J. Noble University Center during the week of December 2, and in the Underground during Take Back the Night.
