SLU HOSTS PERFORMANCE OF JAPANESE DRUMMING GROUP

CANTON - The HOW Taiko Drumming Group will perform on
Thursday, October 24, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to
the public, free of charge.
Taiko means 'big drum' in Japanese, and this style
of drumming has been part of Japanese culture for hundreds
of years. Its roots lie in the countless temples and shrines
located throughout Japan, where drums are played in religious
festivals and ceremonies.
Taiko drums are typically made from one piece of
hollowed-out wood, with a cow skin stretched over each end.
They range in size from six inches to six feet in diameter.
It is only in the last 40 years that Taiko has become
a performance art in itself. In Japan there are over 4,000
Taiko drumming groups, amateur and professional, encompassing
a vast range of playing styles and sounds.
