Meeting Set To Share SLU Sustainability Semester Info With Community
CANTON - Potential community partners are being sought for St. Lawrence University's Sustainability Semester, set to begin January 21. An "information-sharing" meeting will be held on Thursday, January 10, at 7 p.m. at the site of the program, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Classroom, just off campus on Route 68.
Staff of the Sustainability Semester will discuss the goals and structure of the semester and the ways in which community members might partner with the program, including field trips to farms, homesteads or businesses, internships or workshops.
The compensation structure for community partners will also be discussed. Community members who have partnerned with St. Lawrence in the past on sustainability-related issues, as well as those who may be interested in future partnerships, are encouraged to attend.
Similar to the highly successful Adirondack Semester, students in the Sustainability Semester will live and take courses together. These courses will address themes of sustainability, such as land and water use and food production from a variety of disciplines and perspectives. The 12 participating students will live at the site, with two program staff members, taking courses that focus on sustainability from such disciplines as environmental studies, English, philosophy, history, performing arts, biology and geology. Students will also work on site to grow food, build and help renovate energy-efficient structures, and live as sustainably as possible. In addition, students will engage with local community organizations and individuals with special experiences in land use and food production.
