'Sugar Babies' Film At SLU; Talk With Filmmaker Serrano Follows

CANTON - St. Lawrence University will screen the 2007 documentary film The Sugar Babies: The Plight of the Children of Agricultural Workers in the Sugar Industry of the Dominican Republic on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Eben Holden. Filmmaker Amy Serrano will speak and take questions following the screening.

The event, the O'Loughlin Leadership Endowment Series lecture, is open to the public, free of charge.

The Sugar Babies is a feature-length documentary examining the lives of children of agricultural workers in the sugar industry of the Caribbean and issues of human trafficking, modern-day slavery and denial of birth rights. Shot on location in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, England and the United States, the film is in Spanish, French and Creole, and subtitled in English. It is narrated by writer Edwidge Danticat, who has visited St. Lawrence as part of its Writers Series.
