A List 2/9/04 COMMUNITY INVITED TO GRAND OPENING OF SLU STUDENT CENTER CANTON – St. Lawrence University's neighbors throughout the region are invited to participate in the grand opening of the new Student Center on campus, to be held on Saturday, February 21, with a ceremony beginning at noon. An open house and guided tours of the new building, accessible from Park Street in Canton, across from Brewer Bookstore, will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Evening entertainment is also planned. The 60,000-square-foot building took 18 months of construction to complete, beginning with groundbreaking in July 2002 and finishing in January. Project architects are MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni, of Pittsburgh, PA; the general contractor is Northland Associates, Syracuse. Among the building's highlights: - Ground Floor: A "food court," opening onto a patio, with kitchen and serving area; mail room; and multi-purpose room, with a capacity of 200 people, for movies, comedians, musical performances, lectures, etc. - Second Floor: An entrance area across from Dana Dining Center and near Park Street and Brewer Bookstore; eating areas; offices for student life/co-curricular education staff, including financial services staff; the career services office; leadership education center; a balcony over the multi-purpose room. - Third Floor: A large lounge area; student organization offices, with flexible space options, for the Thelomathesian Society (student government), The Hill News (student newspaper), The Gridiron (yearbook) and others; "rolling offices," lockable storage carts for use by student organizations that may be moved within the building, to wherever they are needed; a large meeting room, for campus governance (students, faculty and staff) groups, Alumni Executive Council and Board of Trustees meetings.
