SLU Gallery Hosts Street Art Exhibition, Based On Student Research

CANTON - An exhibition called "Contemporary Street Art as Cultural Expression and Political Resistance" will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from Thursday, October 21, through December 10.

Based on a research trip undertaken by Gallery Director Catherine Tedford; students Kat Dwyer, of Stowe, VT; Bridget Montesanti, of North Tonawanda, NY; and Charlie Reetz, of New York, NY; and Class of 2006 graduate Spencer Homick, to Berlin and Munich in May and June of this year, the exhibition documents contemporary street art through photography, printed ephemera, creative writing, performance and film.

On October 21, a performance and film by students will be presented in the gallery at 4:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., also in the gallery, there will be a discussion with Oli Baudach and Nada Carls, from Hatch Kingdom in Berlin, "the only sticker museum in the world." The events are open to the public, free of charge.

The team of researchers says that Berlin is "home to a lively alternative and internationally thriving street art culture. Nowadays, for better or worse, almost every surface in the city is marked with handwritten scrawls, painted and spray-painted designs, stickers, stencils, paste-ups or posters. Situated metaphorically at a complex intersection of imagery and content, and formed by history, mass media, commerce and pop culture, street art in Berlin addresses both the personal and the political. Social media also play a role in this context, and Web sites, listservs and blogs have created a hybrid mix of what could be called 'street art 2.0.' As such, street art exists without borders in both physical territories and virtual worlds."
