STONE-CARVING DEMONSTRATION AT SLU FOR ARTS FESTIVAL

CANTON -- Inuit sculptor David Ruben Piqtoukun will give a stone-carving
demonstration of a work-in-progress at St. Lawrence University as part of
its Festival of the Arts, which focuses on Inuit art and culture.
The demonstration will be on Monday, February 26, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
in the shop area of Gulick Theatre. That evening, Piqtoukun will give a
slide lecture about his work, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the
Griffiths Arts Center. Both events are open to the public, free of charge.
Piqtoukun has been a sculptor for nearly 30 years, and his work is
recognized internationally. In his presentation, he will show carvings in
various stages of completion, using Brazilian soapstone to demonstrate the
nature, difficulty and techniques of carving. The slide lecture will cover
his early work and the process by which he has re-discovered his Eskimo
origins.
The St. Lawrence University Festival of the Arts, "From 'Nanook'
to Nunavut: The Art and Politics of Representing Inuit Culture," continues
through March 7 on campus, with a variety of exhibitions, performances,
films, demonstrations and lectures included.
