The Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, based in Virginia's Shenandoah
Valley, features 11 actors, three plays and one simple idea: Shakespeare's
plays work best when performed under the conditions for which they were
originally designed -- on a bare stage, surrounded by audience members who
share the same light with the actors, each of whom plays several roles. The
group's goal is to strip away 400 years of accumulated theatrical clutter
from Shakespeare productions and, in doing so, restore the original vitality
of his plays.
This year's tour marks SSE's first presentation of a Renaissance
play by a contemporary of Shakespeare's, Francis Beaumont. The Knight of
the Burning Pestle, a treasure of theatre and acting lore, is a rollicking
comedy based on the premise that the Elizabethan/Jacobean audience is
expected to be part of the play; it is for this reason the perfect choice
for the SSE's first non-Shakespeare play from the English Renaissance.
