SLU STUDENTS TO HELP OUT COMMUNITIES FOR SPRING BREAK
CANTON - St. Lawrence University students are among the thousands from around the nation
this year turning away from more familiar notions of spring break - partying, home cooking
and sleeping late - in favor of lending a hand in the Gulf Coast region devastated by
Hurricane Katrina.
In addition, volunteer groups are headed to other areas of the country in need of
assistance, while the Laurentian Singers embark on a tour of Eastern Europe.
At least 1,000 college students from 28 liberal arts schools - including St. Lawrence - are
planning to take part in this wave of support for those affected by Katrina.
Liberal arts colleges with Gulf Coast service trips in the works for spring break
include Alma, Agnes Scott, Amherst, Augustana, Bard, Bates, Coe, Colorado, Connecticut,
Davidson, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Grinnell, Hamilton, Hobart and William Smith,
Macalester, Manhattan, Oglethorpe, Occidental, College of St. Benedict and
St. John's University, Southwestern University, St. Olaf, Trinity, Wellesley, Whittier,
Willamette, William Jewel and University of Puget Sound.
About 20 St. Lawrence students who work with the campus chapter of Habitat for
Humanity will spend their spring break in Slidell, Louisiana, to work on clean-up
and building projects in the city, where 85 percent of the homes and businesses
were damaged as a result of the hurricane.
Another group of 10 will go to the St. Francis Inn, a Franciscan living and working
community in the inner city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to help in its soup
kitchen, women's center, and thrift shop.
And another 11 University students will go to Los Angeles, as the culmination of
their education class, "Transformative Leadership, Peace-Making and Non-violent
Communication." In Los Angeles, they will receive training in experiential learning
models related to peace-making, which they will subsequently use to work directly
with youth in its inner-city schools. The group will return to campus with a
service project on anti-bullying, which they will implement at the Canton Middle
School.
Finally, the Laurentian Singers - a mixed-voice a cappella choir - celebrate the
group's 60th anniversary with a spring break tour in Germany, the Czech Republic
and Poland. Performances will take place in Leipzig, Germany (March 18 through 20);
Prague, Czech Republic (March 20 through 22); and Krakow, Poland (March 23
through 25).
