MUSIC ENSEMBLES AT ST. LAWRENCE OPEN TO COMMUNITY
CANTON - Membership in several of St. Lawrence University's music ensembles is open
to the community.
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus of 50 to 60 voices, combines the
vocal talents of students, faculty, staff and community members and performs a
varied repertoire, often with orchestral accompaniment. Rehearsals are Tuesdays
from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center. This spring's concerts,
April 14 and 15, will be a revue of American operetta, featuring the music of
Victor Herbert (Naughty Marietta, Sweethearts, Babes in Toyland), Rudolph Friml
(The Vagabond King, Rose-Marie), Sigmund Romberg (Desert Song, The New Moon,
The Student Prince), Jerome Kern (Showboat) and others. Tenors and basses are
especially welcome; for membership information contact director Barry Torres
at btorres@stlawu.edu or 315-229-5171.
The String Orchestra, a 35-member string chamber orchestra made up of violins,
violas, cellos and basses, includes University students and staff, but is also
open to local community musicians and students as well. The orchestra rehearses
on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Gilbert Recital Hall; concerts will be April 29
and at the Russell Opera House, on a date to be announced. Music for this semester
is "a Celtic journey," a stylistically diverse assortment of Scottish and Irish
traditional music, including ballads, jigs, reels and polkas. For membership
information, contact director Chris Hosmer, at 315-386-1127 or cello@twcny.rr.com.
The Wind Ensemble is open to woodwind and brass players and percussionists. This
semester the focus will be chamber music for winds, with the specific repertoire
to be determined by the membership make-up. Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays,
7 to 9 p.m., in the Underground, Noble Center; a concert will be held on April 18.
For membership information, contact director Tim Savage at 315-379-1597 or
