A List 1/17/05 FITNESS CLASSES AT SLU OPEN TO COMMUNITY CANTON – St. Lawrence University offers a variety of fitness classes that are open to the community as well as to students, faculty and staff. Participants do not need to be members of the University's Stafford Fitness Center to enroll in fitness classes. There is a $10 registration fee per semester for fitness center members, faculty/staff and St. Lawrence retirees; there is a $5 registration fee per semester for current St. Lawrence students. Community residents who are not paying members of the fitness center must pay class fees, which vary and are specified. A six-week schedule of classes begins Monday, January 24, and runs through March 6, except where noted. Registration, which begins Monday, January 17, is complete when payment is received. To register, get class descriptions or to get details on registering – including policies regarding late registration, refunds and withdrawals – call the fitness center at 315-229-5368 or go to the office downstairs in Newell Field House, 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Mondays 4-5 p.m., $40; Wednesdays 4-5:30 p.m., $50. Ashtanga Yoga is a series linking vigorous postures and breath, which regulates the flow of prana (the life force). Students will learn the foundations of Ashtanga yoga: the Sun Salutations, the Ujjayi breath technique, standing and seated postures, and inversions. Students will produce heat, energize the body and have a chance to enjoy the effects of yoga and relax the body in Svasana (deep relaxation). Ashtanga yoga purifies, strengthens, and relaxes the body, benefiting body, mind, and soul. - Pilates Fusion, with Lisa Francey. Tuesdays 5-6 p.m., $50; Thursdays 5-6 p.m., $50. Fusing the best from Pilates, dance, yoga, and gymnastics to stretch and sculpt the body. Limit 30 participants. - Ultimate Six-Week Body, with Lisa Francey. Tuesdays 4-5 p.m., $50; Thursdays 4-5 p.m., $50. 20 minutes of step, 20 minutes of hi/low cardio, 20 minutes of Pilates abs. Diet advice and homework exercises. Limit 30 participants. - Indoor Cycling, with Bob Durocher. Mondays and Wednesdays noon-1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence faculty/staff/students. Indoor cycling for all abilities. If you have been afraid to try it because you are not sure how, this is the perfect class for you. Bob will set your bike up for you and teach you how to spin properly. Burns calories, tones legs, glutes and hips. You'll be glad you took this class. - Progressive Dance for Beginners and Intermediates, with Margarte Mauch. Tuesdays 7-9 p.m., $25. Choreographed dance steps set to a variety of rhythms and dance styles. It's energizing. Great exercise for the mind and body. Expect the learning curve to be challenging and fun. Come for the love of dance. It's a great way to make new friends. Non-marking shoes required. - Tai-Chi, with Margi Kirschenmann. Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5 p.m., $65 community/faculty/staff, $45 students for 10 sessions. Tai-chi chaun is an ancient Chinese martial art that differs from other martial arts by its emphasis on softness. In Tai-chi, movements are performed slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth transitions between postures. Tai-chi combines meditation, physical exercise, and the art of self-defense. People of all ages enjoy and benefit from practicing Tai-chi. - Strength and Toning, with Teresa Brownell. Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-9 a.m., $36. For all levels of fitness. This total body strength class will work the major muscle groups in both upper and lower body to both strengthen and tone your body. Participants will set their own level by choosing weights appropriate for them. Class will focus on core strength moves, abdominals and glutes. - Kendo, with John Maissonneuve. Sundays 2:30-4 p.m., Wednesdays 7:30-9 p.m. Fees, two days per week, $40 member/student, $45 non-member/student; one day per week, $25 member/student, $30 non-member/student. Japanese Fencing. It is Japan's senior and elite martial art, practiced literally by hundreds of thousands of men and women, at university and high dchool levels, as well as company dojos. It is by far Japan's most popular martial art [budo]. - American Kang Duk Won and Self-Defense, with Frank Palumbo. Mondays 6-7:30 p.m., $50 all participants for eight weeks. Martial arts exercises: Real self-defense techniques for real street situations! Learn strike-blocks-escapes for personal safety. Also, conditioning, stress reduction, confidence and inner energy. - Strength and Toning, with Robin Durocher. Tuesdays and Thursdays noon to 1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. A class that focuses on all major muscle groups. Increasing muscle mass will tone your body and increase your metabolism. You set the difficulty by the amount of weight you use. Each class will be different and challenging. We will use dumbbells, balls, and mats. It is fun, and in six weeks you will see a big difference. - Indoor Cycling, with Jodi Axtell. Tuesday and Fridays noon to 1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. An intense cycling workout to music. Class is structured to accommodate first-timers to veterans. A great cross training alternative. - Indoor Cycling, with Sarah Pensgen. Mondays 5-6 p.m., Wednesdays 4-5 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. Non-impact indoor cycling. You will see and feel your weight come down your thighs. Buttocks and abs get firmer; your energy and stamina increase. - Capoeira, with Relani Prudhomme. Wednesdays 4-5 p.m., Fridays 4-6 p.m. (participants may choose to stay for one-hour segments 4-5 p.m. or 5-6 p.m.), $40. Capoeira (Cah-poo-WAY-dah) is a rich and dynamic art form, originating from Africans in Brazil, which incorporates beautiful circular dance and acrobatic moves as well as powerful fighting techniques and a good dose of trickery, all set to the unique capoeira rhythms and songs from Brazil. This class offers a complete upper and lower body workout, increased flexibility and awareness, while challenging the student's wits, creativity and reaction time. - Beginner Cross Country Skiing, with Jenny Townsend. Tuesdays noon-1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. Learn how to cross country ski on the St. Lawrence Golf Course. Beginners welcome. Classes will meet in Newell lobby (front doors) and we will walk over to the golf course together. Classes will only be held if there is sufficient snow. Participants must provide their own skis. - Advanced Cross Country Skiing, with Jenny Townsend. Wednesdays noon-1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. This class is designed for the advanced level cross country skier or racer. Learn efficient technique and race strategies through video analysis and critique. We will focus on the classic technique, as classes will be held on the St. Lawrence Golf Course. Classes will meet in the Newell lobby (front doors) and we will walk over to the golf course together. Classes will only be held if there is sufficient snow. Participants must provide their own skis and kick wax. - Rowing, with George Repicky. Mondays and Wednesdays noon-1 p.m., $36 non-St. Lawrence students/faculty/staff. Rowing on a Concept 2 ergo meter and slides. Great workout!
