Caption 9/13/04 HAND-MADE CANOE GIVEN TO SLU ADIRONDACK PROGRAM – Students in the 2003-2004 First-Year Program Sprague College at St. Lawrence University built a canoe from scratch, with assistance from Higher Education Opportunity Program Director William Short, an experienced boat-builder. This year, the students donated the canoe they made (named the "Sprague Stripper") to the University's Adirondack Semester, for use by participants in that program. Shown with the canoe are, from left, First-Year Program Director Steven Horwitz; Short; 2003-2004 Sprague College faculty member Ruth Kreuzer; 2003-2004 Sprague College faculty member Paul Doty; and Adirondack Semester Director Baylor Johnson. The theme of Sprague College in 2003-2004 was "I Can – Can U?"; participants used the topic of canoes and canoe-building as a model of how to fully contemplate something, from personal, practical, political, aesthetic, historical and local perspectives.
