Saranac Lake Spanish Teacher Awarded Fellowship By St. Lawrence
CANTON - Trisha A. Wickwire, a high school Spanish teacher at Saranac Lake Central School, has been awarded a fellowship by St. Lawrence University that will allow her to study in Peru during the summer.
The fellowship was created through a gift to the University by Emerita Professor of
Modern Languages and Literatures Rita Goldberg. It is designed both to support Spanish teachers who would benefit from spending time in a Spanish-speaking country and to foster collaboration between St. Lawrence University and area schools.
Wickwire plans to travel and study the Inca culture and Quechua language in Peru this summer, in order to expand upon information she uses in a Spanish 4 course. She plans to incorporate what she learns into the course, with information about the customs and culture of both the modern and ancient Peruvian indigenous people. Wickwire earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at SUNY Potsdam and has been teaching at Saranac Lake since 2005.
This is the first time that the fellowship, open to full-time teachers of Spanish in a public or private school in Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton or St. Lawrence County, has been awarded.
