CONCERT OF SOUTH INDIAN PERCUSSION SLATED AT ST. LAWRENCE
CANTON – A concert of South Indian percussion music, led by Sri Umayalpuram
K. Sivaraman, will be performed at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, November
2, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden. It is open to the public, free of charge.
This unique ensemble takes the audience on an exciting journey into
the world of Carnatic music and percussion from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Featured
instruments include jalatharangam (a set of 18 porcelain cups of distinct
sonorousness), chenda (a hollow cylindrical drum tuned by strings and small
bamboo rings), thimila (an hourglass-shaped drum made from polished jack wood),
edakka (a wooden drum held in position by interfacing cotton), ghatam (clay
pot) and Carnatic violin.
Songs by various composers of India in a variety of rhythmic cycles
(thaalam) and a variety of melodies (ragam) will be presented. South Indian
songs that sound like western tunes will also be played.
Sivaraman is one of the greatest exponents of the mrudangam (a
barrel-shaped hand drum) and South Indian rhythmic principles. He has earned
the title of Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honor bestowed by the
Indian government. In addition to accompanying Carnatic musicians, he has
shared the stage with many of the great North Indian musicians, including
Pandit Ravi Shankar.
