Sondergard Named Piskor Professor At St. Lawrence

CANTON - Sidney Sondergard has been named Piskor Professor of English at St. Lawrence University.

The Piskor Professorships were established by the Board of Trustees to honor Frank and Anne Piskor on the occasion of his retirement as 14th president of the University. Piskor Professors "must be excellent teachers and have demonstrated leadership in developing new learning experiences for students" and must "set high professional standards by showing concern for the intellectual activity of the campus and by being a productive and respected scholar, and give promise of continuing growth and excellence."

Sondergard has been a member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1986. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wichita State University, and the Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

This year, two books by Sondergard were published that are the first complete English translations of short stories by 18th-century Chinese writer Pu Songling. Eventually, almost 500 stories in six volumes will be published in English translations by Sondergard; they feature illustrations by St. Lawrence graduates. The 1997 Frank P. Piskor Faculty Lecturer on campus, he is also the author of Sharpening Her Pen: Strategies of Rhetorical Violence by Early Modern English Women Writers (2002) and co-translator of the 2002 book The Cabala of Pegasus: An Annotated Translation of Giordano Bruno's Cabala del cavallo Pegaseo.
