SLU ARTS FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS PEOPLE, CULTURE OF SEA ISLANDS

CANTON - The St. Lawrence University Festival of the Arts, to be
held on campus February 2 through 9, is called "The Gullah
Connection: From West Africa to the Islands of the Americas."
It focuses on the people of African descent whose ancestors
were brought by their captors to the sea islands off the southern
coast of what is now the United States. In these islands, people
created ways of life and cultural practices that retain strong ties
to their native Sierra Leone while also adapting to the new island
environment of the Americas. In the festival, performance and other
artistic work will be placed in the context of the larger African
diaspora in the Americas, especially those of the Caribbean and the
rural South.
