SLU Board of Trustees Praises Canton Fire Department

CANTON — The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees on Saturday presented the Canton Fire Department with a resolution of appreciation for the department’s actions on Oct. 6 in responding to the Gunnison Memorial Chapel fire.

The Board’s resolution expressed its appreciation for the volunteer fire department’s quick response to the fire, responding only minutes after they were notified at 5:07 a.m. The resolution also recognized the work of the Potsdam, Gouverneur, Rensselaer Falls and Morley fire departments, and it recognized the efforts of students, parents and alumni who currently serve the force.

The resolution included several of the messages that flooded in by members of the St. Lawrence community after the fire, including, “Your service and dedication are amazing,” “You worked hard to save an important place on campus that becomes a home for so many,” “Thank you to all who worked tenaciously to save this precious chapel, as well as other buildings that were at risk of damage,” and, simply, “Hats off to Canton's bravest.”

The resolution was presented to Canton Fire Chief Robert Crowe and was read by McCurdy-Sprague Trustee Jonathan K. Cardinal ’08.
