'SLICK OF '76' MUSICAL TO BE PERFORMED AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - The Slick of '76: A Musical Catastrophe, by Barry Keating and David Schechter, will be performed in Gulick Theater at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday and Thursday, September 27 and 28, at 8 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30, at 10 p.m. Free tickets, required for admission, are available at the Gulick Theater box office September 25 through 30 from 1 to 5 p.m. For information, call 315-229-5748.

The musical farce tells the story of one of the largest inland oil spills in North American history; it took place on the St Lawrence River in 1976. Originally commissioned by John Burt, The Slick of '76 was written and created at St. Lawrence University by a New York City company in 1986, with composer Keating and writer/director Schechter. The musical toured the St. Lawrence River region during the summer of 1986 and helped bring closure of the event to residents. It also inspired more vigilant education and action on environmental issues having an impact on river communities.

A revival production was mounted this summer at the Clayton Opera House benefiting Save The River, a citizens action organization founded 30 years ago in response to the spill. The Slick of '76 is now returning to its source, under the leadership of Schechter, London director/producer Andrew Wood and New York music director Connie Meng.
