SLU Gallery Hosts Exhibition Of Silkscreens By 'Joyous Revolutionary'
CANTON - The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University has the exhibition "Sister Corita: The Joyous Revolutionary" from August 19 through October 24.
A Catholic nun for over 30 years, Sister Corita Kent (1918-1986) viewed the culture of her times through a lens of spirituality and a Catholicism experiencing great change. Her recognition of the miraculous in the ordinary and the holiness of everyday life fueled her humanist-inspired serigraphs (silkscreen prints) - bright, dramatic images often based on commercial symbols, references to mass media and the pure impact of the written word. As agents of change, the works recast popular culture, daily life, social movements and political events in ways that sought to deepen viewers' understanding of issues and propel them to take action.
Organized by the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles, California, "Sister Corita: The Joyous Revolutionary" features more than 45 original serigraphs, plus supporting images. The exhibition explores her work both chronologically and thematically, showing how her prints corresponded with issues in the national spotlight. Its tour is arranged by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of the Mid-America Arts Alliance.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the gallery will host silkscreen workshops with Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Melissa Schulenberg on September 26 and October 10, each from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Maurer Printmaking Studio, Noble Center. Silkscreen workshops
are free and open to the public, but registration is required by calling 315- 229-5174 in advance.
