Experiences Of Latino Immigrants Explored In SLU Talk
CANTON - A major issue in migration research - whether immigrants assimilate to new lives in the United States or fail to do so - is the topic of a lecture by Silvia Pedraza, professor of sociology and American culture at the University of Michigan, on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall (Room 218) at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Pedraza's talk is titled "Assimilation or Transnationalism? Evidence from the National Latino Survey (2006) for Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and South Americans who Immigrated to the U.S. from 1958 to 2005."
Born and raised in Cuba, Pedraza immigrated with her family to the U.S. when she was 12. Her research interests include the sociology of immigration, race and ethnicity in America, and the sociology of Cuba's revolution and exodus. In particular, Pedraza's research seeks understanding of the causes and consequences of immigration as a historical process that forms and transforms nations.
