POET/ESSAYIST KAMENETZ TO GIVE SIEGEL LECTURE AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - Rodger Kamenetz, author of seven books, including The Jew
in the Lotus and The Missing Jew: New and Selected Poems, will give
the 2002 Rabbi Seymour Siegel Memorial Lecture at St. Lawrence
University on the topic, "What I Learned From the Dalai Lama." The
event will be on Thursday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Herring-Cole,
followed by a dessert reception. It is open to the public, free of
charge.
Kamenetz is internationally known for his work on Jewish-Buddhist
dialogue, and lectures frequently on contemporary religion. His poems
have been widely anthologized, and he is a recipient of a National
Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in literature.
The Jew in the Lotus has been called "the outstanding Jewish
book of the decade" and has inspired a profound re-evaluation of Jewish
thinking in the light of the dialogue with Buddhism. It inspired a
documentary film of the same title, airing on public television in
1999.
Kamenetz is a professor of English and religious studies at
Louisiana State University, where he teaches in the graduate creative
writing program and directs the Jewish studies minor.
Rabbi Siegel was a noted Conservative Jewish author and
scholar. His family donated his papers to St. Lawrence University's
Owen D. Young Library and created an endowment for an annual lecture
on campus in his memory.
