Einstein's Science Topic For Siegel Lecture At St. Lawrence
CANTON - Stephen Stern, assistant professor of religion/Judaic studies at Gettysburg College, will present the 2010 Rabbi Seymour Siegel Memorial Lecture at St. Lawrence University, "Einstein's Jewish Science: Were the Nazis Right?," on Monday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Herring-Cole. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Many consider scientist Albert Einstein to be a Jewish hero. At the same time, many Jews reject the claim, made by those in the Third Reich, that his work was "Jewish science." In this talk, Stern will examine what is meant by the term "Jewish science" and explore the question of whether or not there could be a sense in which the Nazis' claim could be considered correct.
Rabbi Siegel was a noted Conservative Jewish author and scholar. His family donated his papers to St. Lawrence University's Owen D. Young Library and created an endowment for an annual lecture on campus in his memory.
