SLU PROFESSOR SHUMAN WINS EDUCATION AWARD

CANTON – St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of Education James C.
Shuman received the Charles C. Mackey Excellence Award in Service
Leadership from the New York State Colleges of Teacher Education at
the association's conference in October.
The award is presented annually "to an educator in New York
State who has demonstrated the personal and professional qualities that
exemplify the highest standards of leadership in the education
profession." The award is named in honor of Mackey, the recently retired
executive coordinator of the Office of Teaching Initiatives in the New
York State Education Department. Mackey is the only other recipient of
the award, in 2002.
A graduate of Carleton College, Shuman earned his master's degree
and Ed.D. at West Virginia University. He joined the St. Lawrence faculty
in 1989 and is chair of the education department. Shuman has served on
the executive board of the New York State Association for Teacher Educators,
including two terms as president, and he has worked with area public schools
and colleges to develop masters-level programs in educational leadership
for the region.
