WORK OF 'GRAPHIC WITNESS' SUE COE ON EXHIBIT IN SLU GALLERY

CANTON - "Ship of Fools," an exhibition of work by artist Sue Coe,
will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence
University November 13 through December 20. Coe will give a slide
lecture on her work on Tuesday, December 3, at 7 p.m. in Room 123
of the Griffiths Arts Center; the event is open to the public,
free of charge.
Coe describes herself as a "graphic witness to realities
more often overlooked or avoided." She is also described as a
"visual journalist," who uses printed images in preference to words.
For some 25 years, she has explored factory farming, meat-packing,
apartheid, sweat shops, prisons, AIDS, and most recently, war.
Coe's commentary on political events and social injustice has been
published in newspapers, magazines and books, and the results of
her investigations are hung in museum and gallery exhibitions, as
well as held by collectors.
Coe's paintings and prints are often auctioned as fund-raisers
for a variety of causes.
Called "one of the most important politically oriented
artists living in the U.S. today," Coe has been committed to
reaching a broad audience through the print media from the outset
of her career, working as an illustrator for such publications as
the New York Times and Time magazine. Widely written about and
exhibited, Coe has appeared on the cover of Art News and been the
subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and
Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Her work is in the collections
of many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art
and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The artist's lecture at St. Lawrence University is funded
by the Jeanne Scribner Cashin Endowment for Fine Arts, with special
thanks to Melissa Schulenberg.
